Roland Petit embodies the elixir of ballet like almost no other artist: even at the age of 80, the great choreographer radiates an aura of youthful vitality, and when he receives the audience's thanks at the end of a performance, he seems to reflect the youthfulness of the dancers around him. There is hardly any great literary material that Petit has not put his own personal stamp on. His ballet La Chauve-souris (The Bat) was created in 1979 for the Ballet National de Marseille and premiered in Monte Carlo. Petit's version relocated the Viennese Strauss operetta back to the pre-war Paris of its original, and in the interpretation by La Scala Ballet in Milan, recorded in 2003, it was also given a certain Italian flavor. The result is a cosmopolitan choreographic mix of Parisian esprit, Viennese charm and Milanese elegance that is simply irresistible.
