Guerrieri: Sonate di Violino Op. 1

The Parnassi musici ensemble never fails to surprise us with its new programs, especially with previously largely unknown German and Italian sonatas, presented in the finest musical style. The seven (!) musicians now interpret – of course on historical instruments – a selection from the Sonatas op. 1 by Agostino Guerrieri. Guerrieri’s collection Sonate di Violino a 1. 2. 3. 4. per Chiesa & anco Aggionta per Camera was published by Francesco Magni Gardano of Venice in five part books in 1673. It is also the only work by Guerrieri that saw the light of publication. All of the sonatas have titles with the names of persons, and patrons and promoters are often honored with such dedications. While the violin sonata made its way over the Alps during the course of the 1660s and 1670s with Mealli, Schmelzer, Böddecker, Biber, Muffat, and others and then developed independently in the north, in Italy room was found for new experimentation with figures, international stylistic mixtures, dance types, and virtuosic, novel figure work – and Guerrieri’s collection exhibits these characteristics of great formal openness.
