Ignacio Cervantes is a key figure in Latin American piano music. As Cuba's cultural and national identity grew stronger during the 19th century, the genres of danza and contradanza became increasingly popular in dance and concert halls, forming a natural bridge between different social classes. Cervantes' pieces have a similar swing and enthusiasm as Scott Joplin's omnipresent rags; they blend Cuban humor and joie de vivre with the romantic aesthetics of Chopin. The titles of the pieces range from a poignant Adiós a Cuba to the laughter of La carcajada. Son of a Basque father and an Iranian mother, Álvaro Cendoya won the prize for the best interpretation of Spanish music at the international Premio Jaén competition in 1989. He is professor at the Basque Conservatory of Music.
