Like hardly any other non-Hungarian composer of the 19th century, Brahms was familiar with the folk Hungarian art music of the epoch. One result of his attachment to Hungarian culture was the composition of a total of 21 "Hungarian Dances", which he published in two tranches: the first 10 1869 and the 11 pieces of the second series 1880. Originally, they were set for piano two-handed and four-handed. The themes mostly come from songs and dances by famous Hungarian composers, but there are also Hungarian folk songs and some original compositions by Brahms. The "Hungarian Dances" belong to Brahms' most popular works and have spread all over the world in countless arrangements and transcriptions.
