We know almost nothing about the composer Giovanni Giorgi, except that he was Kapellmeister of San Giovanni in Laterano in 1719 and died in 1762 as Court Kapellmeister in Lisbon. The quality of his music, especially his deeply moving Ave Maria, was already highly appreciated by his contemporaries. Stylistically, he can be classified as a composer of the transition from High Baroque to Pre-Classical. His intimate knowledge of Renaissance polyphony and early Baroque polychoralism is entirely at the service of the new style.
