Bach's St. Matthew Passion is almost always described as a double-choir composition for two choirs and two orchestras. Two large ensembles engage in dialogue with each other, and the score reveals the image of a symmetrical building. Nevertheless, there are good arguments for understanding the score in a different way. From the bottom up, it looks very much like we shouldn't think first in terms of equality or symmetry. Jos van Veldhoven has spatially implemented this hierarchical concept instead of the traditional symmetrical one by placing the two groups of musicians at a distance from each other: Thus the asymmetry of two musical ensembles that are in dialogue with each other and react to each other, but are not the same, becomes clear.(pasja Mateuszowa)
