Even before the discovery of these sonatas about 100 years ago, Biber was known to the music world as an exceptional violinist and creator of sophisticated violin literature. He was the first Kapellmeister at the Salzburg court and wrote sacred vocal works and two operas. The 15 Mystery Sonatas, also known as Rosary Sonatas, refer to episodes from the lives of Jesus and Mary, according to Biber's dedication. Musically, the work is remarkable in that Biber prescribes a different tuning of the empty strings (a so-called scordatura) for each of the sonatas. This results in special timbres and enables the player to play a variety of chords • The Canadian violinist Julia Wedman, a specialist in historical performance practice, now presents a complete recording after two years of studying this work, which not only impresses with its musical quality, but also with its detailed and well-founded accompanying texts.
