Donizetti's opera Maria Stuarda is the most popular work in the bel canto trilogy about the Tudors, which also includes Anna Bolena and Roberto Devereux • In the production by Franco-Tunisian Denis Krief, which was based on the critical edition by Anders Wiklund, the golden glittering ambience of the recently rebuilt Teatro La Fenice forms a charming contrast to the director's modern perspective. Krief emphasizes that it is the emotional rivalry that drives the plot of the opera, rather than the political conflict. Both queens are deprived of their freedom by circumstances, but both are also in love with the Earl of Leicester. This is why Krief has chosen the labyrinth as the central symbol in his production.
