In Klaus Guth's production, the psychological drama is emphasized through the use of enormous masks and enclosed spaces. The tense atmosphere arises from broken blood ties, fears and traumas. As Guth himself says: "I have often used such a formation of masked figures to visually express the psychology of the characters".
If we look at what Gluck was trying to reform, that means simplicity. It essentially means 'putting things away,'" explains conductor William Christie. His signature transparent, but never cool, orchestral sound fits perfectly with the descriptive elements of Gluck's score.
