Critics see him in the tradition of Walter Felsenstein and his concept of realistic musical theater. Kupfer is said to have an extremely fine feeling for the psychological processes among the stage characters. In this stage production of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, now documented on DVD, which goes back to a production by Kupfer at the Komische Oper Berlin in 1989 (a guest performance at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London was also recorded), the well-known story of the Thracian singer and the loss of his lover unfolds with particular relevance and intensity.
