In his study of Byzantine musical notation, Wellesz also had much to do with Serbian sources. Over many centuries, Serbia's musical heritage has emerged on the soil of the Balkans, where East meets West. This - to this day - restless region, always threatened by historical earthquakes, is permeated by the most diverse ritual, religious and cultural traditions. This results in an incomparable synthesis of very special beauty and expressiveness. The Ensemble Renaissance from Belgrade, playing on historical instruments, dedicates part of its research and interpretation to the reconstruction of those ancient Serbian musical traditions that were cultivated in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque. It is a glimpse into a long-gone chapter of Balkan art history and, moreover, of older European history in general.
