•Pfitzner: String Quartet No. 2 in C sharp minor, Op. 36Among his contemporaries, Hans Pfitzner is the one who turned most to chamber music. He wrote only four string quartets, however, each of which accentuates a period of his creative life: the Quartet in D minor, which he wrote as a 17-year-old at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, the Quartet in D major op. 13 (1902), typical of his early mastery, the Quartet in C-sharp minor op. 36 (1925), a work of his mature period, and the Quartet in C minor op. 50 (1942), representative of his later style.
We published the latter together with the D major quartet some time ago, now we complete our complete recording with the early D minor quartet and the torn-genius quartet main work in C sharp minor, which Pfitzner later reworked into a symphony under the opus number 36a. Along with the "Palestrina", this work certainly marks a high point in his oeuvre
The elements of highly tense expression and independence of voices increased to the limits of traditional harmony fill this work and push it to the limits of the genre to the limits of the genre.
