A meeting of prodigies – that could be the title of this album, which combines three works of two great Romantic composers. While one of them Ernst von Dohnányi, still needs to be championed in practically all areas, for he is even today overshadowed by his younger, more famous countryman Béla Bartók, the other, Richard Strauss, has no need of this, since he has already conquered the world with his symphonic tone poems and operas; but his chamber music still needs some powerful advocacy – especially the large-scale Violin Sonata in which the 23-year old composer already seems to breathe the zesty air of Don Juan and Rosenkavalier. It is palpable that violinist Hellen Weiss, violist Wen Xiao Zheng, cellist Gabriel Schwabe and pianist Paul Rivinius are thoroughly enjoying the tasks they have set for themselves...
