Alexandre Tharaud is one of the most versatile pianists, who repeatedly transcends the boundaries of the most diverse genres. With the album Bach Tharaud, the world-class French pianist is now following in the footsteps of one of the most famous composers of all time. However, Alexandre Tharaud transcends genre boundaries even with this classic. The pianist took pieces such as a choral movement from Bach's St. John Passion, a Siciliano from a flute sonata or a Bourrée from a lute suite and transcribed them for his instrument. Tharaud thus follows Bach's own tradition; after all, as an admirer of Antonio Vivaldi, the composer transformed his orchestral works into organ concertos.
Alexandre Tharaud also included existing piano arrangements in the program, such as the chorale "Erkenne mich, mein Hüter" from the St. Matthew Passion. Bach must not have been able to let go of the longing, intimate melody of the original hymn for some time, as he incorporated it into other works. Admired by music connoisseurs like no other composer, Bach's works were also adapted by other composers. Charles Gounod, for example, developed his popular "Ave Maria" from Bach's Prelude and Fugue No. 1 in C major, merging two different musical eras in the process.
