The British composer James Dillon (*1950) was inspired by Ovid and Sophocles for his first scenic work. First performed in Porto in 2004, it cannot be clearly attributed either to the opera rich in tradition or to the young musical theatre. According to Dillon, the tragic story about the Athenian king's daughter Philomele, whose brother-in-law Tereus first raped her and then cut off her tongue in order to cover up the crime, was particularly irritating to her about the absence of voice or the violence that is done to the voice here.
