Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello (1987) is Morton Feldman’s last completed composition. Despite its length of around 80 minutes, it is a rather short piece by his standards – compared to the extreme lengths of other later pieces such as For Philip Guston (over 4 hours) or the String Quartet No. 2 (approx. 5 hours).
The Ensemble Avantgarde counts among its members Leipzig musicians committed to the performance of music of the twentieth and twenty-first century. The ensemble, led since its founding in 1989 by its artistic and organizational director Steffen Schleiermacher, operates in changing formations. Its core membership is drawn from Leipzig orchestras like the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Orchestra of the MDR.
