At the age of thirty, Léo Delibes made his artistic breakthrough in the French musical metropolis. After his debut with the music for the ballet La source (The Source), he immediately received a commission for a full-length ballet composition; the result was Coppélia.
• The scenery for this fairy-tale piece came from Charles Nuitter, who borrowed the story from E. T. A. Hoffmann's tale The Sandman. The ballet ensemble of the Opéra National de Lyon danced Léo Delibe's 1994 story ballet Coppélia, choreographed by Maguy Marin, with sets by Renaud Gaulot, costumes by Montserrat Casanova and lighting design by Jørgen S. Johannessen.
