Georg Philipp Telemann's late work is almost inexhaustible in surprises. How often have I already written this and yet I am not embarrassed to proclaim it again now. With what creative power the 80 year old opens up new worlds of expression at the end of the 18th century, one can only marvel again and again in view of his last oratorios. One of the very last - from 1761 - is his Easter oratorio "The Resurrection" (not to be confused with the "Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus," 1760). There is no longer a rigid sequence of recitatives and arias: flexible, almost through-composed, the music follows the strong affects of the (excellent) libretto, always in search of unconventional means of expression, such as a dramatic accompagnato accompanied only by a highly virtuosic solo violin. Or the very beginning to the words: "Thou deep, dead, dreadful silence"...
As a supplement, we have produced an absolute rarity, showing the cheerful Telemann in one of his many activities as Hamburg music director The birthday cantata for the Danish King Frederik V on a Danish, German and Latin text "De Danske, Norske og Tydske Undersaatters Glaede" from 1757 - an absolute must for cpo with its well-known "danophile" preference !
Our soloists are Dorothee Mields, Britta Schwarz, Andreas Post and Klaus Medens. The Telemann Chamber Orchestra Michaelstein and the Magdeburg Chamber Choir under the overall direction of Ludger Remy make the happiness complete.
