Schumann’s Märchenbilder may be inspired by the fantastic romanticism found in the tales of E.T.A. Hoffmann and the novels of Jean Paul, inhabited by bizarre characters and surreal situations, featuring the imagery of ancient German legends: fairies, elves, mysterious creatures that haunted the composer in his later years.

The Fantasiestücke by Carl Reinecke breathe a warm domesticity, they are lyrical and charming “Songs without Words”.

Played with characteristic imagination and warmth of tone by Massimo Piva (viola) and Inessa Filistovich (piano).
