The third Tragédie en musique by the Sun King's sur-director tells of the youth of the Greek hero Theseus, long before his battle with the Minotaur or his entanglements with Ariadne and Phaedra. The story leads from the underworld to the island of paradise, from Versailles to Athens, carried by Lully's music in hitherto unattained tension. Mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes is a flamboyant Médée in Lully's "most furious" opera. Tenor Matthias Vidal (Thésée) and soprano Deborah Cachet (Églé) give their duets supreme dramatic power.
