Two albums from 1958 (Monk in Action and Misterioso), released as At The Five Spot by Milestone in 1977, present a different take on Monk's music through the authoritative playing and interpretations of his tunes by tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, reinforced by solid backing from drummer Roy Haynes and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik.

"Johnny Griffin came to Monk with a reputation as a speed demon - doubling the tempo was his default mechanism, carving out melodies with a blend of gentle swing and complex bop phrasing. Their contrasting natures-Griffin's flowing flamboyance and Monk's percussive dissections-enhanced by Roy Haynes' insistent division of the beat, create a tension unlike any of Monk's undertakings." • (Art Lange)
