Purcell's only opera •
Dido and Aeneas is Purcell's only verifiable opera - yet in this work he has creatively explored the guidelines of the continental genre and adapted the rigid forms of opera seria to the dramaturgical understanding of English stage works: Although the original libretto of the opera has been preserved, large parts of the music have unfortunately been lost, so that today's versions of the opera can only perform a torso of about one hour. The present version by William Christie and Deborah Warner replaces the missing prologue by reciting appropriate texts from various poems.
