In the history of opera, Monteverdi's work was the first pinnacle that helped create the genre: his opera Orfeo from 1607 is considered by many to be the first proper opera. At the beginning of the 17th century, when he was Kapellmeister at the Court of Mantua, Monteverdi was one of the greatest musicians of his time. In 1613 he got the most honorable job in the musical world of the time: he became Kapellmeister of the San Marco Cathedral in Venice. The first opera houses were founded in Venice around 1640 and Monteverdi became a much sought-after composer. A year before his death he wrote 'Incoronazione', which was performed several times during the 17th century.

Concerto Köln, the inventive and imaginative ensemble that focuses on original performances, recently celebrated its fifteenth anniversary. This autonomously organized orchestra is one of the top ensembles in Baroque and Pre-Classical music.
