opis
In 2010, the Salzburg Festival presented a new production of Richard Strauss's Elektra, directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff, which the Wiener Kurier called "the best new opera production of the year. The opera centers on the mythical female figure Elektra, who has nothing more in mind than avenging her father's murder. The campaign of revenge extends to murder and manslaughter. In the end, self-deception and self-destruction culminate in a dance of death.
Strauss became acquainted with Hofmannsthal's Elektra during a theater performance in Berlin and immediately recognized the brilliant operatic text as well as the enormous musical potential for tension in an opera. The gloomy atmosphere, which is an integral part of the piece, finds its climax in the dissonant, harsh music consisting of huge blocks of sound. The opera can do everything -enthrall, intoxicate, and simply send actors and listeners alike into ecstasy.
