Radu Marian, born in Moldova in 1977, is a vocal phenomenon: He is one of the few singers in the world who has the register of a male soprano voice. In contrast to the artificial voices of falsetting sopranos, its natural timbre awakens the sound of the castrati of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Radu Marian showed extraordinary musical abilities at the age of four, and at the age of seven he performed in a concert in Moscow for the first time. This was followed by studies in piano and singing in Moscow and Bucharest, which he graduated with honors and the title of "concert master". Then he went to Italy to perfect his education, where he studied early music in Rome with Flavio Colusso and appeared in operas by Giacomo Carissimi all over Europe.
Antonio Bononcini was born in Modena. His musical career, however, took place in Vienna at the Habsburg imperial court, which at the end of the 17th century cast a spell over a large number of Italian composers. Of the more than one hundred Italian cantatas that are preserved in the imperial archives from 1699 to 1713, many turned out to be compositions by Antonio Maria Bononcini, who emerged as a master of this genre. With their brilliant coloratura, these works offer Radu Marian excellent opportunities to show off his vocal art to the full.
