Piano transcriptions and paraphrases not only occupy a numerically significant place in the oeuvre of Leopold Godowsky, they are also still among his best-known works. The character and degree of adaptation can be quite different. They range from a faithful transcription to a "recomposition" of the pieces, in which, of course, much of Godowsky's own artistic personality was incorporated. Carlo Grante presents here a number of paraphrases by composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, which amaze with their sometimes drastic creative liberties.
