Dissatisfied with the traditional concerto form, Feruccio Busoni (1866-1924) created a monumental 68-minute work whose symphonic dimensions and intentions demand almost superhuman endurance from the pianist, in addition to sovereign virtuosity. Equally high are the demands on the sensitive, in places chamber-musical intimate interplay with the orchestra. Gunnar Johansen proved in 1956 that it was more than equal to Busoni's demands to combine transcendental virtuosity with poetic sensitivity, even live.
