"Every time I open a newspaper, I'm reminded that we live in a world where we can no longer afford not to know our neighbors," says Yo-Yo Ma, star cellist and American of Chinese descent. In 1998, the Silk Road, this ancient route from China across Central and Western Asia to the Mediterranean for the exchange of goods and culture, became the namesake for Yo-Yo Ma's intercultural project. The Silk Road Ensemble was to bring these cultures together again in their music: Chinese, Mongolian and Indian music met Sufi sounds and the multifaceted tradition of Islamic music.
The Silk Road Ensemble's new CD expands the Silk Road's intercultural reference to a world community, presenting works by four composers who all now live in the United States: Gabriela Lena Frank has her roots in Peru and now lives in Berkeley, Angel Lam combines the cosmopolitan horizons of Hong Kong and Los Angeles, Evan Ziporyn lives as an expert on Indonesian music in Boston, where the Argentinean Osvaldo Golijov also makes his home today - he combines the traditions of tango and klezmer in his horizon.
