The G minor Quintet has a disarmingly winsome opening movement, followed by a simple Larghetto, rich in texture. Then, after the vigorous Scherzo, the finale has a rustic character with a drone-like accompaniment for the main theme. The E minor Quintet brings a busy but blander opening movement, with an underlying melancholy lyricism, which is dispelled by the Mendelssohnian Scherzo, with the gracious Trio coming twice, but in different keys. The calm of the reflective Adagio then contrast with the energetic, even agitated finale. These are two fine works, very persuasively played, even if the ensemble is not always absolutely immaculate. Good recording too, and value for money at Naxos price.
