Since Friedrich Ernst Fesca was a splendidly trained violinist, it is hardly surprising that his masterfully elaborated sixteen string quartets quickly brought him a fine reputation as a composer. The quality and originality distinguishing Fesca’s string quartets is also very much in evidence in his flute quartets. These four-movement works are of great formal and conceptual unity. Their beauty does not lie in salient details or in catchy melodies; instead, Fesca’s personal style reveals little features all of its own and deviations from the norm of set or expected structures together with a fine sense of the integrative capacity of the four-part classical texture. Here the Linos Ensemble, familiar to the cpo listening audience from its marvelous recordings of the septets of Alexander Fesca, Friedrich Ernst Fesca’s son, freshly and spiritedly interprets three of the elder Fesca’s four quartets.
