Within the early works of Johann Sebastian Bach, the three movement types Prelude, Toccata and Fantasia allowed the composer to approach the limits of the instrument in the field of playing technique, both on the harpsichord and on the organ, without being subject to a restrictive formal scheme. The early toccatas are among Johann Sebastian Bach's most enigmatic works, but they are also among his most fascinating creations because they still seem to contain little of the qualities of the more mature works that we know better.
