John Cage, a pupil of Henry Cowell and Arnold Schonberg, made some of their innovations his own, integrating them into his works to create something totally new.
From Henry Cowell he took the idea of altering the sound of the piano by intervening on the strings, thus expanding the expressive spectrum of the instrument so as to make it reach unimaginable measures until then. As for Schonberg's twelve-tone system, Cage playfully extended it to create a 25-tone system, with the aim of eliminating any conditioning and being free to experiment with any type of music. The piece "Bacchanale", contained in the double album "Works for Prepared Piano" was written in 1938, when Cage was asked to accompany the dancer Syvilla Fort on the piano. To create the impression of a percussion ensemble, he modified the instrument and so it all began.
“Works for Prepared Piano” is a collection of prepared piano works written between 1938 and 1952 that demonstrates how broad the sound spectrum is. Austrian pianist Markus Hinterhauser interprets these works with great skill, passing with ease from rhythmically complex pieces to minute gradations of sound, treating Cage's music with innate intensity.
