opis
Finally, it goes to Austria: there was a composer named Romanus Weichlein (1652-1706). He was a clergyman and worked at various monasteries. For this he also wrote the masses recorded by Gunar Letzbor.
In view of the fact that these were women's convents, an interpretation with a boys' choir may not be historically justifiable. But since so much music that was meant for boys' voices is sung by women these days, why not do it the other way around? There is nothing wrong with the quality of the St. Florian Boys' Choir - on the contrary. This choir is not very well known, but sings very beautifully and has singers who have great soloistic qualities. This is also clearly evident here: Markus Stumpner and Quintus Moucka (soprano) as well as Deniz Erdebil (alto) bring impressive performances here, not only technically but also stylistically.
A completely natural, breathing phrasing, a clear articulation and clear dynamic accents characterize this interpretation, both by the soloists (in addition to the oys, Gernot Heinrich and Andreas lebeda sing the tenor and bass parts) as well as by the choir and instrumentalists. Weichlein's music is relatively simple, and the often misused word 'Kleinmeister' can rightly be used here. But that doesn't reduce the quality in any way, because these fairs are simply nice to listen to. But in my opinion, sometimes the tempo is a little too slow and then the articulation becomes a little too forceful. Especially the Sanctus of the Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis is a little too long with almost 9 minutes.
Nevertheless, I would like to recommend this recording, and I advise everyone to look for further recordings of the St. Florian Boys' Choir. •Johan van Veen
