Nakład wyprzedany, ostatni egzemplarz Stéphan Oliva and François Raulin have already tried, with Tristano, to celebrate the blind pianist, yet very lucid about the jazz of his time. The bet undertaken and held by Philippe Ghielmetti is to make known the Variations on Lennie Tristano as dreamed and carried out by the seven mercenaries of the current French scene. We admire the producer of the Sketch label, who has managed to unite energies in a project as exciting as it is daring.
To accompany the duo of pianists, he brought together a loose rhythm, the two double bassists Bruno Chevillon and Paul Rogers, the wonderful guitarist Marc Ducret, as well as the talented blowers Laurent Dehors (clarinet, bass clarinet and double bass) and Christophe Monniot on alto saxophones and baritone.
The music of the author of the "Requiem" (dedicated to Charlie Parker) has not lost any of its originality. Lennie Tristano quickly integrated Bird's contributions, theorized them, then assimilated other avant-gardes, becoming in turn a "passer", illustrating himself in the double register of the concert and the teaching. His recordings as a quintet, or in a trio with Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz, are essential for their limpid phrasing, determined attack, and capacity for renewal. Because Tristano has set out to rewrite the standards in an unconscious interpretation of the score, letting the dark side act, in a constant play of alterations.
