In 1790 Haydn made his first trip to London at the invitation of the violinist and impresario Salomon. His stay in the English capital became a triumphal procession that he intended to repeat as soon as possible after his return. After his string quartets op. 64 had proved extremely successful in London, Haydn wrote a series of six quartets in the winter of 1792-93, which he took with him to his second stay in London at the beginning of 1794 along with several new symphonies. In their character they differ fundamentally from the previous works of this genre, which always have the character of intimate chamber music for a small circle of connoisseurs. The Apponyi Quartets, on the other hand, are obviously designed for a larger concert audience. Thus Haydn, having already taken the decisive steps towards the development of the string quartet genre, also paved the way for his children to enter the concert hall.
