The success of the Finnish composer Uljas Pulkkis at competitions in Finland and abroad in the second half of the 1990s drew the attention of the international music world to this exceptionally talented Finnish composer. He made the big break with his violin concerto Enchanted Garden, which was one of the excellent pieces at the International Rostrum of Composers 2001.
This concerto for clarinet Tales of Joy, Passion and Love, composed by Pulkkis for Kari Kriikku, consists of three movements, which are played without a break. Pulkkis gives the first movement, the almost symphonic work -Tales of Joy - a playful character, while the second movement -Tales of Passion - its already intense atmosphere with a septet (string quartet plus three clarinets) pushes it to its climax. Tales of Love, the last movement, is an almost operatic art song based on the poem She Sung of Love by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. Uljas Pulkkis tells us a dramatic and stirring musical short story with the Tales of Joy, Passion and Love, which lasts about half an hour.
