Jordi Savall, a pioneer of early music for more than thirty years, also preceded his fellow artists in other respects: as early as 1998 he founded his own label, on which all new recordings of the artist couple Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras and their ensembles have appeared ever since. • In 1967 Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras met, and a partnership began that is unparalleled in the world of music. Both come from Barcelona, and both had recently found an artistic home in the still young early music movement. From 1968 the couple completed their musical education in Basel at the Schola Cantorum, five years later Jordi Savall took over the professorship of his teacher August Wenzinger and now shaped generations of students. Over the course of fifteen years, Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras founded the ensembles Hespèrion XXI, La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations, with whom an enormous repertoire of music from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century was performed all over the world and the immense discography of over 160 recordings was created. • Hellhörig registered Savall the dawning crisis of the classical recording scene and dared the courageous step into independence. The venture was worth it, the success was sensational: Alia Vox is now present in over 45 countries, one million CDs have been sold since the label was founded in 1998. The new sales connection in Germany with harmonia mundi will certainly give this success story even more impetus.
