At the beginning of the 20th century Kodály and Bartók found a real treasure in the Hungarian folk tradition, which enabled them to realise their artistic goals. As a folk music researcher, music educator and, last but not least, as a composer, Kodály saw it as his duty to sift through the folk music tradition as it was still cultivated in the country, to collect and record folk songs and save them for posterity. He did this not only from a purely musical-ethnological point of view, but also by incorporating them into "art music", which included providing the melodies with piano accompaniment.
