Composers who dared to set poetry by Victor Hugo to music knew what a challenge they were facing. But they knew how to select from this monument of literature precisely those texts that would benefit most from their music, and in this way they created a multi-layered portrait of Hugo: every facet of the poet, who portrayed the world as much in verse-biting irony as in romantic lyricism, comes into its own - from the ethereal or sensual lover to the committed political personality.
