The third release in our Audio documentation series »Musica Sacra Hamburgensis 1600-1800, « a coproduction with the ZEITStiftung and Deutschlandradio Berlin, focuses on the chorale variations and chorale concertos of the three great Hamburg »S« composers of the seventeenth century: the church music director Thomas Selle, the city music director Johann Schop, and the organist Heinrich Scheidemann. During the mid-seventeenth century – possibly as a result of Selle's reorganization of church music – such works were performed every two weeks as »organist's music« together with solo singers and instrumentalists from the city ensemble. The result was top-quality sacred music exhibiting – as in our examples – an astonishing range of possibilities in its treatment and variation of the hymn pretext. On this CD it is presented in all its beauty by the Hamburger Ratsmusik, an ensemble that has won repeated praise from the press for its »excellent knowledge of baroque style. «
