There is no doubt that the piano in Schumann's work, as in that of hardly any other composer, is the means of expression of his innermost feelings; his piano music reflects like nowhere else the conflicts of his life and the tensions of his ambivalent personality. Schumann often improvised on the piano, where he gave free rein to his moods. Most of his piano works were written in the years 1830-39, that is, from the year he finally decided to become a composer until his marriage to Clara, which had to be enforced in court after years of dispute with her father. In the inner conflicts of these years, the manic-depressive illness that darkened the last years of his life may have already announced itself. For his creative energy, on the other hand, this period provided an ideal breeding ground, as the works on this CD illustrate.
