Antoine Godeau, Bishop of Grasse and Vence, was celebrated in his day for having paraphrased the 150 Psalms of David, in 'agréables et faciles' airs for composers. Etienne Moulinié chose to furnish Godeau's Paraphrases with a sophisticated muscial setting in concertante style, deliberately making them works destined for concert performance.
