In the elation of his newly won independence, the young composer published six violin sonatas, which he dedicated to his student Josepha Barbara Auernhammer. •
Freed from the hated Salzburg service as concert master and court organist by a kick from the archiepiscopal chamberlain Count Arco, Mozart enjoyed freedom and success in Vienna. "Vienna is the best place in the world for my profession", the worried father, who thought his son was too spontaneous and naive to stand on his own two feet, was reassured by a letter to his native Salzburg. An important source of income was teaching, his undoubtedly most talented piano pupil was Josepha Barbara Auernhammer. According to Wolfgang's rather drastic descriptions, the abysmal ugly young lady fell head over heels in love with him and pursued him with advances. Her piano playing, however, was, as he wrote to her father, "delightful", and Mozart presented these sonatas with her to the Viennese concert audience. Josepha Barbara Auernhammer later became a successful pianist and married her despite her unfulfilled love for Mozart
