If jazz musicians had to pay royalties for the ideas they use in their improvisations, then almost all the pianists who romp around the scene today would owe McCoy Tyner. Tyner is much more than "just" the piano player of the legendary John Coltrane Quartet. He is one of the few true innovators in the history of jazz, and his independent style has influenced practically all the keyboard virtuosos that came after him. His style consists of percussive techniques combined with melodic lines over aggressive dissonances - without losing the blues. This methodology is similar to that of John Coltrane. No wonder that Tyner and the saxophonist worked closely together in the 60s. To this day Tyner is still active and makes music with important artists, including "young lions" like Joshua Redman, Antonio Hart and Christian McBride.
