Chansons de toile is the name given to one of the earliest types of medieval lyricism: narrative songs (hence the alternative name, chansons d'histoire) from northern France, with texts supposedly sung by women as they sat spinning, weaving or doing their needlework. Of a dramatic nature and highly developed, these songs relate in an epic tone some amorous episode or a story of unhappy love; thus fair ladies revealed their little secrets. Though they date from the Middle Ages, there is a timeless element both in the songs and in their subjects. Ligeriana presents a full illustration of these works and their wealth of inspiration in an all-female performance, recreating the atmosphere of the days when ladies would perform their daily tasks while chatting and singing together in the 'chambre des dames'.
