In 1712 Handel, court bandmaster to the Elector of Hanover, requested leave from his employer to go to London in order to continue an opera success of the previous year. The elector granted the leave on the condition that it would not be too long. Happily, Handel left, celebrated triumphs in London and completely forgot to return to his German workplace. In 1714 the Elector ascended the English throne as George I. To make up for his omission, on 22 August 1715 Handel is said to have surprised the king with his water music during a boat trip on the Thames. The story is legend in so far as the king Handel apparently did not resent anything.
