“Emergence: Emily Dickinson” is a wonderful recital of songs, all settings of the works of American poet Emily Dickinson. Combining the broad spectrum of her output from the most prosaic (recipes, epigrammatic response, prayer) to the deepest poetical themes (death, love, nature, eternity, spirituality), these songs provide wonderful connections between the often-compartmentalised parts of her work, and is a valuable survey of her varied literary forms. Devised, curated, and performed by Nadine Benjamin (soprano) and Nicole Panizza (piano), the disc combines existing and premiere compositions by Copland, Hall, Zaninelli, Glickman, and Jarman-Pinto. The charismatic performances of Benjamin and Panizza act as powerful advocates for the American art song genre, firmly reinforcing its critical importance in the Anglo-American musical and literary performance realms. “Emergence: Emily Dickinson” seeks both to challenge and redefine the way in which we read, hear, and experience the creative ingenuity of Emily Dickinson.
