As court music director and organist in Halle, Samuel Scheidt (1587 – 1654) was so well paid that he could do entirely without the income offered by the instruction of private pupils. To lend the younger generation his master’s helping hand, however, he wrote (as did other composers too) a collection of keyboard music that young organists could use for practice.
