Günter Wand (7th Jan 1912) was educated in Cologne and Munich. His career began at the age of twenty, when he began learning his job "from the ground up", first as rehearsal pianist at the Wuppertal Opera, then as operetta and opera conductor in Allenstein, East Prussia. Neither a Nazi nor a time-server, it took him four years to find a post worthy of his abilities, that of chief conductor in Detmold in 1938.Wand returned in October 1945 to a totally destroyed Cologne. He was particularly concerned to repatriate the "degenerate music" banned by the Nazis and committed himself to dozens of world and national premieres for the young generation. The artistic level attained during the "Wand era" was exemplary. He moved to Switzerland in 1974 and worked intensively from there with the orchestras of the ARD, the BBC and NHK Tokyo. His recordings of all the Bruckner and Schubert symphonies with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, begun in 1977, were a worldwide success and marked the start of his "third-age" career. • Wand's music-making moved those who heard it with its impeccable balance of perfection coupled with faithfulness to the original, emotional fulfilment, intellectual control, utmost sensitivity and spiritual penetration. He described his mission as "serving music", a cause to which this totally unpretentious man remained committed for seventy years. He rose to be one of the true "greats" of the twentieth century, a figure standing head and shoulders above our restless times, his name synonymous with the highest musical quality. Günter Wand died at the age of ninety, on February 14, 2002, in his house in Ulmiz, a little village in the Swiss canton of Fribourg. • This Box includes several Günter Wand Concertos: Johann Sebastian Bach – Violin Concerto in A BWV 1041; Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 Op. 48 and others from Haydn, Mozart, Strauss, et al.
