Erlkönigs Tochter (The Elf-King’s Daughter) is a dramatic cantata from 1854, based on Danish medieval ballads. Erlkönigs Tochter is Danish composer Niels W. Gade’s most famous and popular work, now recorded in the German version for the first time. Erlkönigs Tochter was written in the most fruitful and happy period of Gade’s life. This is reflected in the consummate work, in which, both textually and musically, Gade has struck a fine balance between national and more universal elements. On this album, Erlkönigs Tochter is played on period instruments for the first time by highly acclaimed ensemble Concerto Copenhagen and conductor Lars Ulrik Mortensen. This CD follow up the vinyl release (DAC-LP003), released in 2018, but the CD also includes Fünf Gesänge (Five Songs) by Gade. Fünf Gesänge marks Gade’s breakthrough as an a capella composer and is here recorded by the Danish National Vocal Ensemble.
